We decided to make costumes this year that wouldn't overheat us in the July weather, and while the weather was cooler this year, it was still an immensely wise choice given the sheer body heat given off by all the con-goers.
The armor design is a mix of Shining Armor's Captain of the Guard armor seen in A Canterlot Wedding and more historical Roman armor. Also: some bracers, because I love bracers.
The sandals are dark blue leather, the tunic undyed linen, the belt and skirt are denim with gold bias tape, and the cloak is various strips of the same linen, dyed with Rit fabric dye.
The armor is primarily Worbla, with some 1-2mm craft foam to give it a bit more volume.
The crest is genuine horsehair dyed in batches, again using the same Rit fabric dye as the cloak, while the crest holder is a wooden block cut and sanded (I tried Worbla for that too since I had a lot of scraps left over, but it was too heavy and too awkward to work with).
If you're into the idea of making your own costume with Worbla, I *HIGHLY* recommend KamuiCosplay's
ebooks on the subject, as they're only $5 each, don't have DRM, and are immensely useful in figuring out how to put it all together. I was genuinely stuck on how to approach my costume until I read her books.
We won Best in Show at this year's cosplay contest, so that made all the burns, sweat, and tears worth it : P
Now to start on next year's...
